NOMINEES ANNOUNCED FOR SPRING CITY JUSTICE COURT VACANCY

Spring City, UT—The Sanpete County Nominating Commission has selected three nominees for the vacancy in the Spring City Justice Court. The position will replace Judge Ivo Peterson who resigned July 1, 2016.

Following are the nominees followed by place of employment and residence:
• Nathan Gregg Caplin, J.D., Assistant Professor at Snow College, resident of Manti
• Leslie Ann Gallacher, J.D., Law Partner at Wood, Lindsay, Gallacher LLC, resident of Spanish Fork
• Honorable Mark Kay McIff, J.D., Sevier County, Piute County and Fairview City Justice Court Judge, Attorney at Law, resident of Richfield

A comment period will be held through Dec. 27, 2016, before a final candidate is selected by the Mayor of Spring City, Jack D. Monnett, who has 30 days to make an appointment. The appointment is subject to ratification by the Spring City Council. The Utah Judicial Council must then certify the appointment. NOMINEE NAMED TO FILL MORGAN COUNTY JUSTICE COURT VACANCY

Morgan, UT— The Morgan County Nominating Commission has announced the appointment of the Honorable Brian Edward Brower to fill the Morgan County Justice Court vacancy. The position will replace Judge Tony Hassell who will retire effective Dec. 30, 2016.

Judge Brian E. Brower earned a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature with a minor in Criminal Justice from Weber State University. He then graduated from the SJ Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. Upon graduation and passing the bar, he was hired as a Deputy County Attorney for the Weber County Attorney’s Office. He later served as both the Murray City Prosecutor as well as the Layton City Prosecutor before being appointed as Clearfield’s City Attorney in 2007. He served as City Attorney for eight years until being appointed as judge for the Clearfield Justice Court in August of 2015.

JUSTICE COURT JUDGE SELECTION MEETING PLANNED

Spring City, UT—The Sanpete County Judicial Nominating Commission has scheduled a meeting on Dec. 15, 2016, to select judicial candidates for the Fountain Green and Spring City Justice Court to replace Judge Ivo Peterson who retired effective July 1, 2016. The commission will begin the meeting at 9 a.m. in the Spring City Offices on 150 E Center Street, Spring City.

The early portion of the meeting is scheduled for public comment about issues facing the Utah judiciary and refinements or improvements to the system. Public comments will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Following the public hearing, the meeting is closed to allow commission members to select a slate of three to five candidates for the vacancy.

NOMINEE NAMED TO FILL SOUTH JORDAN CITY JUSTICE COURT VACANCY

South Jordan, UT— The Salt Lake County Nominating Commission has announced the appointment of Michael Peter Boehm to fill the South Jordan City Justice Court vacancy. The position will replace Judge Clinton Balmforth who will resign effective Jan. 2, 2017.

Michael Boehm received a degree in business management from Brigham Young University.
After a brief period in the corporate world, he returned to law school, graduating with honors from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California. After receiving his J.D., Mr. Boehm returned to Utah where he joined the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office. During his tenure as a prosecutor, he handled a wide range of matters, including a number of high-profile cases.

Boehm’s appointment to the bench is subject to completion of the court’s new judge orientation and certification by the Utah Judicial Council.

NOMINEE NAMED TO FILL SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY JUSTICE COURT VACANCY

South Salt Lake, UT— The Salt Lake County Nominating Commission has announced the appointment of Anna Lisa Rossi Anderson to fill the South Salt Lake City Justice Court vacancy. The position will replace Judge Catherine M. Johnson who will retire effective Jan. 1, 2017.

Anna Rossi Anderson received her undergraduate degree in Sociology at the University of Illinois in the year 2000, and her law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2003. Anna began her legal career as a prosecutor at the Tazewell County State’s Attorney’s Office in central Illinois, during which time she also received an appointment as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in Peoria, Illinois to assist in the prosecution of several federal cases that originated in her county. Anna moved to Joliet, Illinois in 2007 where she began work as a felony prosecutor with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office. She prosecuted cases in that office for seven years before relocating to Utah in 2012, where she has since been employed as a prosecuting attorney in the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.

Rossi-Anderson’s appointment to the bench is subject to completion of the court’s new judge orientation and certification by the Utah Judicial Council.

Courts and County Officials Break Ground on New Courthouse in Price

PRICE, UT — Utah Supreme Court Justice Deno Himonas joined 7th District Court officials and officials with Carbon County in breaking ground on a $14 million courthouse that will house both district and juvenile court services.

The two-story, 32,000 square-foot building will be constructed on the site of the old Carbon County office building. It will also house two district courtrooms and one juvenile courtroom. It will also include support space for district and juvenile court staff, clerks, and Carbon County Sheriff security. The building will feature enhanced security for in-custody prisoners that will create zones of separation from the public and court staff, as well as digital audio technology in courtrooms to record hearings.

The building is made possible through an agreement between the Utah State Courts and Carbon County. Construction is expected to begin Dec. 1 and is expected to be completed by May 2018.
