SIXTH DISTRICT JUSTICE COURT JUDGES


JUDGE ROY BROWN

Judge Roy Brown was appointed to the Wayne County West Precinct Justice Court in 1988 and to the Wayne County Justice Court in 1992. He was born and has lived most of his life in Wayne County. He recently retired after working 35 years in the construction business and is active in civic activities. 4/10 

JUDGE JOHN R. COX., JR.

JUDGE JOHN R. COX., JR.

Judge John R. Cox, Jr., was appointed to the Sanpete County Justice Court in January 2010. He retired in 2009 after more than 40 years working in the executive and legislative branches of government and in private industry. Judge Cox earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business Administration from Rhodes College, a Master's Degree in Finance from American University, and a law degree from George Washington University. 11/13 

JUDGE GARY JOHNSON

JUDGE GARY JOHNSON

Judge Gary Johnson was appointed to the Kane County Justice Court in April 2016. Previously, Judge Johnson served as the Justice Court Judge for Kanab City until it closed in 2014, and served as a Judge Pro Tem until his appointment to the Kane County Justice Court. Judge Johnson has also served a two-year term as the tribal Judge for the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians. Judge Johnson is a fourth generation Kane County native and has resided in Kanab for the majority of his life. Johnson graduated from Kanab High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Utah University. Judge Johnson attended The National Judicial College in Reno and has completed level one and level two of the Utah State Judicial Institute, which are yearlong courses taught by University of Utah law professors. He also serves as an instructor for Kane County Drug Court. 9/17 

JUDGE MARK MCIFF

JUDGE MARK MCIFF

Judge Mark McIff was first appointed to the bench in May 2014. He currently serves as Justice Court judge for Sevier County, Piute County, Fairview, Fountain Green, Spring City, Moroni, Ephraim City, Gunnison, Manti, and Mt. Pleasant. He received a bachelor's degree in Accounting in 1995 from Southern Utah University and a Juris Doctorate in 1998 from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge McIff served as the Piute County Attorney, the Wayne County Attorney, Deputy Sevier County Attorney, Deputy Garfield County Attorney, and Chief Criminal Prosecutor for the Wasatch County Attorney's Office. He also served as the city prosecutor and city attorney for several cities. In addition, Judge McIff maintained a private law practice in Richfield during most of his career.4/18 

JUDGE GARY OWENS

JUDGE GARY OWENS

Judge Gary Owens was appointed to the Garfield County Justice Court in May 2016. Judge Owens is a lifelong resident of Garfield County. Judge Owens has loved the opportunity to live, work, and play in rural Utah. Judge Owens is retired from the State of Utah Rode Crew and currently works as a real estate agent, a part-time truck driver, and is an owner of Karla's Diner. 9/17 

JUDGE TIMOTHY SMITH

JUDGE TIMOTHY SMITH

Judge Tim Smith was appointed to the Panguitch City Justice Court in 2015. He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1995 and earned his Master of Business Administration in Health Care Management from Western Governors University in 2015. Judge Smith has worked in Healthcare Administration from 1999 to the present. He has also served as a member of the Panguitch City Council from 2006 to 2015 and as a member of the Coalition of Community Patchwork Mending for Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention from 1997 to the present.9/17 

JUDGE PETER J. THOMPSON

JUDGE PETER J. THOMPSON

Judge Peter J. Thompson was appointed to the Big Water Justice Court in February 2006. Judge Thompson has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration. Judge Thompson completed an online 1st year law course through Taft University School of Law and is serving as a regional director of education for 6th District Justice Courts. 1/16
