Judge Brian G. Cannell was appointed to the First District Court in August 2013 by Governor Gary R. Herbert. He serves in Box Elder, Cache, and Rich counties. Judge Cannell graduated from Utah State University and received his law degree from the University of Houston Law Center, both with honors. At the time of his appointment to the bench, Judge Cannell was a practicing attorney and managing shareholder with the law firm of Hillyard, Anderson and Olsen, P.C., where his practice focused primarily on civil matters. Judge Cannell is a former adjunct professor at Utah State University where he taught Mass Media Law focusing on first amendment rights. Judge Cannell has been active with the local bar having served as the Northern Utah Representative of the Young Lawyers Division of the Utah Bar Association, president of the Cache County Bar Association, and president of the Estate Planning Council of Northern Utah. Judge Cannell's community involvement in local nonprofit entities includes the Utah Festival Opera Company, the Bridgerland Applied Technology College Foundation, the Sunshine Terrace Foundation, the Willow Park Zoo Foundation, and the Logan Rotary Club. Judge Cannell currently serves on the First District Court pro-bono committee helping provide access to the courts and legal services for the indigent. 9/14 

Judge Spencer D. Walsh was appointed to the First District Court in September 2020 by Governor Gary R. Herbert. He serves Box Elder, Cache, and Rich counties. Judge Walsh earned a law degree from Brigham Young University's J. Reuben Clark Law School in 2007. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Brigham Young University in 2003. Prior to his appointment, Judge Walsh served as the chief prosecutor for the Cache County Attorney's Office. He previously served as a Deputy County Attorney in the Cache County Attorney's Office and as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the West Valley City Attorney's Office. Judge Walsh was a police academy instructor and taught constitutional law as an adjunct professor for the University of the Rockies and Ashford University. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Walsh served as a member of the Utah Sexual Violence Council for the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice and as a member of the First District Drug and Mental Health Court Committees. Judge Walsh presides over the Box Elder County Mental Health Court.12/20 

Judge Angela F. Fonnesbeck was appointed to the First District Court in August 2019 by Governor Gary R. Herbert. She was previously appointed to the First District Juvenile Court in October 2014 by Governor Gary R. Herbert. She serves Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties. Judge Fonnesbeck received her law degree from American University, Washington College of Law in 2000. Prior to law school, Judge Fonnesbeck received a dual B.A. in Politics and Asian Studies from Whitman College in 1997. Prior to her appointment, Judge Fonnesbeck worked in private practice from 2009 to 2014 where she focused on family law matters. As part of her practice, she also served as a public defender for Cache County and the cities of Providence, Richmond, Nibley, North Logan, and Hyde Park. Prior to managing her own law firm, Judge Fonnesbeck was a shareholder at Hillyard, Anderson & Olsen, P.C. from 2002 to 2009 where she focused on family law matters, criminal defense, juvenile court, general civil litigation and mediation. She also worked as an associate attorney for Perry, Malmberg and Perry in Logan where she focused on insurance defense. In her role as Judge she has presided over the First District Juvenile Mental Health Court, served on the Board of Juvenile Court Judges and the Utah Sentencing Commission, and currently presides over the Cache County District Mental Health Court. Prior to her appointment, Judge Fonnesbeck served in various leadership roles and on a variety of legal boards in the State and local bar organizations, as well as on other community boards and committees.1/20 

Judge Brandon J. Maynard was appointed to the First District Court in June 2014 by Governor Gary Herbert. He serves Box Elder, Cache, and Rich counties. Prior to his judicial appointment, Judge Maynard served as the chief criminal deputy county attorney in Box Elder County. Prior to this, Judge Maynard was an associate attorney at Gridley, Ward & Shaw where he handled civil and criminal defense cases. Judge Maynard received a law degree from Creighton University School of Law. 11/14
